Rock Brittleness

You use the Rock Brittleness form (1D MODEL > Lithology > Tools > Rock Brittleness) to calculate and display a brittleness log in the (Rock Properties) Well View. The brittleness log calculation is based on the Young's Modulus log and Poisson's Ratio log that you select as input data. The log updates, depending on your auto update settings, each time one of the input logs is adjusted. The rock brittleness equation is described in the Appendix C, under Theory and Equations.

You can then use this information to design a fracture and to find the best places to locate your fractures.

If you want, you can also calculate the rock brittleness based on your anisotropic model, where Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio are output.

To create a rock brittleness log

  1. On the form, select the Young's Modulus and Poisson's Ratio logs.
  2. Click (Re)Create to create the brittleness log.
  3. The name of the created log is displayed in the gray entry field.
To change the default name of the created log, double click in the log field. The background turns blue, indicating you can edit the text. When done, click the green check mark to apply the changes.
  1. To add the created lithology log to the Zonation Model view, click Show.
  2. Click OK to close the form.
