Zonation Log

The Zonation Log form (1D MODEL > Lithology > Tools > Zonation Log) creates a discrete log that represents geological zones along a wellbore. The log is built either from an existing Zonation Model or from wellbore markers and can be displayed directly in the Zonation Model Well View.

Each zone in the log is represented by a discrete property class, allowing zones to be clearly identified, named, and color‑coded.

Zonation sources

The structure of the zonation log depends on the selected Zones source.

Zonation Model

When Zonation Model is selected as the source:

  • The zonation log is created from the zonations defined in the Zonation Model.

  • A discrete property class is created for each zonation.

  • If a zonation consists of multiple segments, a separate discrete class is created for each segment.

  • The name of each discrete class is taken from the corresponding source zonation.

  • Colors for the classes are assigned automatically.

This option is useful when the zonations are already defined and maintained in the Zonation Model.

Markers

When Markers is selected as the source:

  • The list displays all markers available on the selected wellbore.

  • At least two markers must be selected to define zoning intervals.

  • A discrete property class is created between each pair of selected markers.

  • The name and color of each class are taken from the top marker of the interval.

  • An additional class is automatically created from the deepest selected marker down to the end of the wellbore.

This option allows zonation to be created directly from marker interpretation without requiring a pre‑defined zonation model.

Creating a zonation log

Follow these steps to create and display a zonation log:

  1. Open the Zonation Log form.

  2. Select the Zones source:

    • Zonation Model, or

    • Markers.

  3. If Markers is selected, choose at least two markers from the list.

  4. Click (Re)Calculate to generate the zonation log. The name of the created log appears in the Zonation log field.
To change the default name of the created log, double click in the log field. The background turns blue, indicating you can edit the text. When done, click the green check mark to apply the changes.
  1. Click Show to add the zonation log to the Zonation Model Well View.
  2. Click OK to close the form.

Result

After creation, the zonation log appears in the well view as a discrete log with clearly defined zones. Each zone is labeled and colored, making the zonation easy to interpret, compare with other logs and models or used in Property Calculator or suitable workflows.
