This equation is derived from compressive tests on 109 oceanic basalt samples recovered from several Deep Sea Drilling Program (DSDP) and Ocean Drilling Program (OPD) core holes. Sample bulk density ranges between 2.45 and 3.05 g/cm, and the porosity ranges between 0 and 8% with UCS ranging between 6,000 and 49,000 psi. This equations is selected as the default equation for basalt.
