Azimuths and their north references
Azimuth values can be referenced to True North or Grid North. True North is the direction towards the geographic North Pole and is the direction of all meridians on a geographic coordinate reference system (see image below). Grid North, however, is based on the chosen projected coordinate reference ('grid') system. Since a solution CRS is always a projected CRS, all solutions have Grid North as their internal North reference.
JewelSuite Geomechanics is able to import well survey azimuths that are received as relative to True North. It will convert those values to Grid North on import, according to the well's location within the solution CRS.
True North and Grid North coincide along the longitude of the origin of a map but Grid North diverges from True North as you move away from the origin.
