Feature Sets
A feature set, which can consist of one or more features, is a collection of 2D locations (x,y; East, North) (although they can have a z component) that is connected by line segments to form an open polyline or a closed polygon. They are applicable to the entire z-range. They are often used to depict background information (such as coastlines), however, sometimes they are the required format to define a boundary (e.g. a license boundary). Other examples are thickness contours, which can be used to constrain the thickness of a geological model layer and fault (gap) polygons.
With contour or iso-lines, the value field is read in the input file as a name tag. When displaying a contour or iso-line, the information stored in the name tag can also be displayed.

ESRI Shape files
When you work with ESRI shape files, multiple files are used, each having another extension. Each file contains specific data information that is needed, but when you import you only need to select the *.shp file(s). This file will extract the information needed from the other files. When you export a feature set or a feature, all the necessary files are generated for you. The only files that are readable in a text editor are the *.prj and *.dbf files.
