Importing data

You import all the different types of data in a similar way. Importing is easiest when you have properly formatted data with the correct file extension and the incoming data is assigned the same coordinate reference system (CRS) as the one assigned to your JewelSuite Geomechanics solution. This is an important step, as you may not mix or merge data from different CRSs.

You can import data files with different coordinate units than the existing units of coordinates in the solution. If the units are not specified in the import data file then the units of the coordinates specified in the solution CRS are used. You must select the coordinates units during the import process if neither the import data file nor the solution CRS has coordinates units assigned to them.

To import data, click an icon in the DATA strip to import a specific type (such as wells, horizons or faults) and select the correct file type from the Files of Type drop-down list in the Import dialog box that appears. Navigate to the location of your data file, click on it to select it, and then click Open.

If the file is of the correct type and properly formatted, a Data Import Validation form opens to allow you to check that your data will be imported as you intend. You can make any adjustments to your data on this form, as well as assign the CRS in the solution to the data. When you are satisfied with your data, click OK to start the actual import.

You can import most common standard data formats, as well as non-standard delimited text formats. For these, the application will try to interpret the columns of data in the file, according to how you specify them. You can import wells, 2D grids, tri-meshes and polyline sets in this way.

To do this, click the icon in the Data strip to import the data type of your file. From the Files of type drop-down list in the Import dialog box that appears, select Custom format. Navigate to the location of your data file, click on it to select it and then click Open.

In the Custom format Data form that appears, specify what the data in each column means. For more on this, see Defining column import data.

Importing 'undefined' or 'unknown' values

If you are importing data from another application for example, you may want to specify 'undefined' or 'unknown' values. JewelSuite Geomechanics has a special reserved value for this. For any item of data, enter the value -999.25 and this will be interpreted as the value 'undefined' during import.

If your data does not import correctly

If you cannot see your Output Information pane, you can make this visible by selecting Panes > Output Information in the Workspace section of the Strip, or pressing CTRL + F5 on your keyboard.

There may be some corruption in your file, or the columns in your file may not be properly formatted. The Output Information pane can provide you with useful information on why the import process is not successful.
