Geomechanics simulation with Abaqus™ software

The Abaqus simulation strip enables JewelSuite to integrate with Abaqus™ software, developed by Dassault Systèmes. The following sections describe the forms and views available in the Abaqus simulation strip (simulate > Abaqus). These tools and inputs allow you to run a complete geomechanical simulation on a 3D mesh. The results can then be imported directly back into JewelSuite, enabling you to analyze them in the full context of the reservoir model.

The list below contains general remarks regarding the interaction between Abaqus™ software and JewelSuite. For any questions specific to the Abaqus™ functionality, please refer to the Abaqus™ documentation.

  • All data and parameters required for an Abaqus simulation are contained in a simulation case within JewelSuite. Output files are generated for each successful Abaqus simulation run and are stored in the simulation case folder within the *.Cases directory.
  • Abaqus™ software uses engineering conventions that differ from conventions in geomodeling:
    • Compressional stresses are negative and extensional stresses positive.
    • Depth is negative and elevation is positive.
  • As with general naming conventions, avoid using names (for instance for horizons or layers) that contain non-standard characters such as asterisk, question mark, colon, etc. Abaqus™ may not accept these characters and may refuse to run.
  • You can use functions to calculate your geomechanical model parameter properties. For an overview of how to use functions in your geomechanical model, see Using functions in the geomechanical model workflow.
  • For advanced simulation options when using the Abaqus connector in JewelSuite, see Modeling thermal effect and Simulating slipping faults.
