Marker validation and correlation backdrop in the Well View

The Well View allows you to validate markers for stratigraphic consistency and visualize correlated zones, helping you to easily recognize erroneous marker picks and identify inconsistencies of markers in individual wellbores. You can do this with the Marker Validation form, which is accessible through the Validation button in the Well View toolbar. It is important to identify any inconsistencies at this stage, before continuing with the construction of the The 3D Structural Modeling workflow

The Marker Validation form has two sections that can aid you in well correlation and marker validation. Both sections work independently of each other.

Invalid markers  The table in the Invalid Markers section on the form lists all 'invalid' markers that occur in your (displayed) wells. A marker is considered 'invalid' when it is located at a stratigraphic position that is not conform the Stratigraphic Model selected at the top of the form. For example, when event A is stratigraphically younger than event B according to the Stratigraphic Model, but it is picked below well marker B in the Well View, it is considered 'invalid' and listed in the Invalid Markers table.

  • Markers are only validated when they carry the same name as the events in the Stratigraphic Model.
  • The table is well selection dependent, so only 'invalid' markers of wells that are displayed in the Well View are listed in the table on the form. The markers themselves, however, do not need to be displayed in the Well View to appear as 'invalid' in the table.
  • Optionally, you can use the 'Show Invalid Markers' icon in the Well View toolbar to indicate 'invalid' markers with an exclamation mark in the view.
When you have stratigraphic doubling in your wellbore, for example due to reverse faulting or inflection points, well markers may be classified as 'invalid', even though they are deliberately not following the stratigraphic order of the Stratigraphic Model. They will still be marked as 'invalid' when displayed in TVT/TST mode or as split wellbore.

View Setting  The checkbox in this section allows you to generate a backdrop of correlated zones in the Well View. The backdrop is rendered when a particular zone's top and base are identified in two neighboring wells, helping you to easily recognize established zone correlations.

  • The backdrop automatically updates during marker picking and when changing marker positions.
  • The backdrop takes the color(s) of the zones in the Stratigraphic Model.
  • Markers do not need to be displayed in the Well View for backdrops to be rendered.

Validating your markers and/or showing the zone correlation backdrop

Before you start the validation, make sure that the wells for which you want to validate markers, are visualized in the Well View, because the 'Invalid markers' table can only contain invalid markers of displayed wells. Well markers, on the other hand, do not need to be visualized in the view in order to be validated.

  1. In the Well View toolbar, click the Validation button to open the Marker Validation form.
  2. Select the relevant Stratigraphic Model and Marker Set from the Model and Marker set drop-down lists respectively: only events present in both data sources can be validated or incorporated in backdrop rendering.
  3. If you want to render the zone correlation backdrop, check the Show backdrop based on stratigraphic level checkbox and select the relevant stratigraphic level in the drop-down list.
  4. Click Apply.
    • All identified 'Invalid markers' are added to the 'Invalid markers' table on the form. If 'invalid' markers are encountered, check the well marker picks in relation to the stratigraphic model.
    • If the Show backdrop based on stratigraphic level checkbox was checked, a colored backdrop is now displayed in the Well View, indicating zone correlations in neighboring wells.
  5. Optionally, click the Show Invalid Markers button to indicate 'invalid' markers with an exclamation mark in the view, which helps you locating them. Note that, for the exclamation marks to be displayed, the marker need to be visualized in the Well View.

If you leave the Marker Validation form open and the Show Invalidation markers button toggled, newly picked markers that are considered 'invalid' are directly included in the validation table and indicated with an exclamation mark in the Well View.
